INDIANAPOLIS – With the 2009 Outdoor Visa Championship Series starting in just five days, fans can take part in the action once again, competing for prizes worth thousands of dollars! The Visa Championship Series kicks off with Relays Weekend in Philadelphia with USA vs the World at the Penn Relays and in Des Moines, Iowa for the 100th Drake Relays on April 25. This marks the first time that the Pick-N-Win Fantasy Game has incorporated the relays, giving fans an additional chance to win a weekly prize.
How It Works
Fans create their ultimate track and field team each week by going to www.visachampionshipseries.com and selecting the athletes or relay teams they think are going to compete well at that week’s meet. Each Visa Championship Series meet is “virtually” scored, with 10 points going to the first-place athlete in each event, 8 points to the second-place athlete, 6 points to the third-place athlete and so on down to sixth place. The athletes and relay teams chosen by the fans score points for their team.
During the indoor season, after the conclusion of the 2009 USA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Houston’s Richard Ross bested over 2,000 Pick-N-Win players by scoring the most points during the Indoor Visa Championship Series with 567. He won the grand prize consisting of a $2,000 Visa Gift Card and USATF/Nike spike bag with apparel. Todd Novotny of Menomonee Falls, Wisc., won the overall second-place prize, a $250 Visa Gift Card and USATF/Nike spike with apparel. Jossi Fritz-Mauer of Philadelphia, Pa. won the third-place prize, a $100 Visa Gift Card and USATF/Nike spike bag with apparel. Weekly winners, who each received a USATF/Nike spike bag with apparel were Thomas Bernhard of Freemont, Calif., who had 134 points after the Millrose Games and Gary Fletcher of San Antonio, Texas, who had 116 points from the Tyson Invitational. There was a three-way tie after the Reebok Boston Indoor Games when Steve Breitkreutz of North Edwards, Calif., Brandon Baker of Westerville, Ohio and Ryan Westman of Bala Cynwyd, Pa., each scored 146 points. All three earned a USATF/Nike spike bag with apparel. Every weekly winner and cumulative points leader was showcased in the ESPN2 broadcast of the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 1. Outdoor prizes The Pick-N-Win Fantasy Game will start over for the Outdoor Visa Championship Series with more prizes at stake! Grand Prize: One Grand Prize winner will be awarded a $2,000 Visa Gift Card and a Nike spike bag with apparel. In 2002, after retiring as Director of US Programs for Special
Olympics, I made a decision to devote my 23 years of hammer throwing
competitive experience and subsequent 26 years of hammer throw coaching
toward establishing a strategy to motivate and help American boys and
girls attain the victory stand in the hammer throw at the 2012 or 2016
Olympic Games. In the year of the 2012 Olympic Games, I’ll be 81 years
old.
My personal goal is to attend the Olympic Games when a boy or girl I
assisted wins an Olympic hammer throwing medal. This is a major factor
that keeps me committed to my training, followed faithfully if not as
vigorously as throughout my own Olympic career. In this regard my role
model and good friend is the oldest Olympic gold medalist thrower,
Wilbur Moose Thompson (London Olympic Games 1948, shot-put) now 88
years young and still coaching.
It’s the general consensus among the most successful hammer throw
coaches that it takes 8 -12 years for a hammer thrower to attain
Olympic victory stand status. By 2012 – 2016, my passionate hammer
throw quest will have covered 10 – 14 years. Will the ebbing decline
of American top level hammer throwing have turned by then and potential
American Olympic hammer throw medalists have emerged? In 2016, I’ll be
85, and I want to be in the Olympic Stadium to witness the positive
results I confidently expect.
In September, I received a message from a man I coached in college with
his pledge to match contributions made to the 2009 USATF Youth Hammer
Throw Fundraiser up to $5,000. He said that he wanted to support our
efforts to advance continued youth participation in hammer throwing,
the event that positively influenced the course of his life.

PA’s Sorensen PR’s and Takes 2nd at Junior Nationals 10K Race WalkPacific Association’s Tyler Sorensen, Pleasanton Heat gets a PR and 2nd Place at the Junior Nationals in Eugene OR this past weekend competing in the 10,000m racewalk. Tyler walked an impressive 45:36.65 to secure himself on the Junior National Team at the age of 15 and the youngest on the team. We shall see Tyler again when he goes for another Junior Olympic National title next month. He is the current national record holder for Youth Boy age record in the 3000m. Congratulations Tyler!!

NARI – Give a Book Program
While the numbers of elite race walkers in America has dwindled for some time, a spotlight was placed on the problem at our recent 50K National Championships where only three competitors finished the race. While there are a great many factors that contributed to this light turnout, there is no question that we need to rebuild race walking in the United States if our sport is to continue.
Currently, there are many efforts throughout the country to try to revive race walking. Racewalk.com would like to help, so we’ve teamed up with NARI (North American Race Walking Institute) to help provide learning materials for youth and high school programs. Now we are asking your help. The “Give a Book Program” is designed to help NARI fund and distribute additional books to coaches and young race walkers throughout the United States. Initially, our goal is to raise money to distribute 200 books between Maine, Texas and California. We picked these areas as they are areas where youth race walking is showing promise.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – (July 26, 2009) – Andrew Cook, 28, of Flower
Mound, Tex. and Japan’s Yoko Shibui, 30, scored dominant victories at The
San Francisco Marathon(TM) today. Cook topped the men’s field in a
finishing time of 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 32 seconds for his third win
in this race. He also won in 2006 and 2007. Shibui won the women’s race
in 2:46:34 as she successfully tuned up for the marathon at the IAAF
World Championships in Berlin, Germany on August 23.
A record turnout of over 21,000 entrants participated in the marathon
(26.2 miles) and two accompanying half marathon (13.1 miles) races, plus
a 5K run/walk. Ideal, overcast conditions, with temperatures in the low
to mid 50s greeted the throng. Runners from all 50 U.S. states and 26
countries came to the City by the Bay for its world-famous marathon.
Both Cook’s and Shibui’s wins were convincing. By the 8-mile point on the
hilly, city-wide loop that includes an out-and-back segment over the
Golden Gate Bridge, Cook shed co-leader Allen Wagner (Huntington Valley,
Penn.) and then proceeded alone to the finish line near the Ferry
Building on the Embarcadero.
“It’s awesome to be a three-time winner here,” said Cook, who is a
history teacher and cross country coach at Flower Mound (Tex.) High
School. “But, mentally it was hard running most of the race alone. You
just want to try and push yourself and stay mentally tough. I kind of
fell apart a little over the last 10 miles. I was very happy to come out
on top today because Allen (Wagner) is very experienced.”
Wagner, whose personal best marathon of 2:18:25 is over a minute better
than Cook’s, faded to fifth place after making several porta-pottie
stops. 45-year-old Guillermo Gonzalez (Mexico/Pasadena, Calif.) captured
second place and the masters (age-40-and-over) men’s victory in a distant
2:33:55. Fritz Van de Kamp, 28, of Salt Lake City, Utah was third in
2:34:01. San Francisco’s Daniel Feldman, 26. was fourth in 2:35:15.
Japan’s Shibui demonstrated why she is the all-time seventh fastest
female marathoner in the world, with a blazing 2:19:41 personal best on
her resume. Despite using the race as a long training run in preparation
for the World Championships Marathon in Berlin, the Japanese star’s
margin at the finish line was 13 minutes ahead of former Santa Rosa High
School and Stanford University standout Julia Mallon (nee Stamps).
Mallon, who now resides in Miami, Fla. was second woman in 2:59:32.
Mexico’s Ligicz Ortega, 26, finished third in 3:02:29.
Shibui and her team of coaches and trainers have made Flagstaff, Ariz.
their training base for the past two months in preparation for the IAAF
World Championships marathon race. She wanted to briefly come down from
Flagstaff’s 7,000-foot altitude to test her fitness at sea level, but,
she found more variances in altitude than she expected in San Francisco.
“This is a very hard course,” Shibui commented through an interpreter
about the up-and-down San Francisco Marathon route. “It’s the toughest
course that I’ve ever run. It was much more hilly than I expected, but
overall it was a very good tune-up for me. I think if I was in top
condition, like I will be in a month, I would have run with the lead man
today.”
Women training at altitude for the World Championships also dominated the
competitive 2nd Half Marathon, which runs over the second half of San
Francisco’s marathon route. Tera Moody, 28, of Colorado Springs, Colo.
topped the women in 1:13:37 followed by second-placer Fiona Docherty, 33,
of New Zealand, who spends half the year training in Boulder, Colo.
Docherty finished in 1:17:25. Both Moody and Docherty will face each
other again as members of their respective USA and New Zealand national
teams in Berlin. Jessica Minty, 24, of Blowing Rock, N.C. made a
successful debut at the half marathon distance by placing third in
1:17:48. Masters standout Sylvia Mosqueda, 43, of Los Angeles was fourth
in 1:18:20.
Abiyot Endale, 23, an Ethiopian athlete who resides in New York, topped
the 2nd Half Marathon men in 1:07:36 followed by Miguel Nuci, 29, of
Turlock, Calif. in 1:07:58.
