Sam Blake has few peers when it comes to multi-tasking. He juggles straight A’s in middle school with overlapping schedules of swimming and running. His mother sometimes catches him watching YouTube clips of Olympic track on his computer while polishing off a math or history assignment. No sweat.
Sam particularly enjoys watching the tactics used by the great Ethiopian runner, Kenenisa Bekele.
“I like the way he waits until everyone else is fading and then just takes off,” Sam said. “He’s pretty much unbeatable.”
It might be a bit soon to compare him to Bekele, but Sam Blake has few peers at his age level when it comes to distance running. He clocked a 4:56 mile last spring as an 11-year-old. He won the Midget Boys title at the 2009 USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Reno, outracing a field of 233 finishers in a snowstorm.
Blake covered the 3,000-meter course at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in 10 minutes, 12 seconds, imitating Bekele’s late-race surge to win by 13 seconds. It was the second national championship for Blake, a Campbell resident who competes for the Los Gatos Athletic Association Track Club. Despite being a year younger than most of the top challengers, he won the 2008 Junior Olympic title in Virginia by a three-second margin.
“Last year I tried to raise my arms up as I finished but I was too tired to lift them,” said Blake, who turned 12 on Nov. 18. “I was able to raise them this time. It was really fun.”
Sam’s mother wonders whether he was born to run.
“I have four kids, and his was the only pregnancy when I kept running,” Susie Blake said. “He was running as soon as he could walk. He’d have to run up and down the hallway before he could get to sleep.”
For the time being, at least, running must give way to swimming. Sam is an excellent swimmer who, because of a fortuitous birthday, hopes to clean up in the pool this spring. This fall, he mixed in three or four swim practices a week while running about the same amount. Rather than compete in the 2010 Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, he plans to concentrate on swimming and the Far Western Regionals.
When he finished one recent cross country race and his mom said he must be exhausted, Sam said it was nothing compared to a hard workout in the pool.
“The pain you feel in running comes from breathing,” Sam explained. “It’s not really physical pain like you feel in swimming, when your whole body is tired.”
Susie Blake, a former professional triathlete, coaches Sam in both sports. She stopped competing when she had the third of her four children (Sam is the second-oldest).
“We have the philosophy that we want to save him so he he’s running well when he’s 17 or 18,” Susie Blake said. “I think he’ll eventually choose running, but we’re a swimming family, and he enjoys doing both sports. He’s only 12.”
Normally, as defending champion, Blake would have been considered the favorite, but Sam said that wasn’t necessarily the case.
“I felt like I had the potential to win, but most of the kids in the race didn’t know me since I didn’t run JO track last spring,” Sam said.
Two feet of snow fell on the day of the race. Blake said the cold caused his chest to hurt in the first half of the race, but it didn’t keep him from making a decisive move going up a hill with about 700 meters to go. He finished 13 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Ryan Alexander of Southern California’s Equalizers.
“It was really cold and there wasn’t really a designated trail because there was so much snow on the ground,” Sam said.
In addition to winning the 2008 national midget title, Blake braved snowy conditions to finish fifth in the Bantam Boys class at the 2007 National Junior Olympics in Lawrence, Kansas.
“Two of his three national races had inclement conditions, so I guess it doesn’t bother him too much,” said Sam’s father, John Blake.
With Blake and teammate Steven Sum finishing 1-3 in Reno, Los Gatos finished second in the team battle with 38 points, just five points behind the first-place Southern California Roadrunners.
“I like the team aspect of cross country,” Blake said. “On the starting line, you can be nervous along with other people you know.”
While he’ll trade his running shoes for a swim suit this spring, Sam figures he’ll eventually concentrate on track.
“In the end, I’ll probably be better at running,” he said. “My goal is to make it to the Olympics in track. After the Olympics, if I make it, my goal is to do the Ironman Triathlon. I always feel happy when I do something really hard. I like the more strenuous sports because you can push yourself.”

LATE REGISTRATION WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED THIS YEAR Race Day Timeline (November 29)
Races are contested youngest age group to oldest age group; girls then boys. Races will start shortly after the last finisher in the previous race crosses the finish line. If there are less than 21 runners in each of the Intermediate and Young age groups these races will be combined and contested at the same time. Based on pre-registration it will be announced in the morning coach’s meeting if these age groups will be combined.
Advancement from the Region 16 Junior Olympics to National USATF Junior Olympics The first twenty (20) finishers in each age group qualify for the Nationals. If a top 20 finisher decides not to advance to nationals, the athlete who placed 21 cannot go in their place. In addition to the individual finishers, the first three (3) teams in each age group will qualify for the Nationals. A team may have 5, 6, 7 or 8 runners and must be registered to compete as a team before the competition begins. At the start of each race, the Regional Coordinator will walk the starting line to validate that each runner is present and if a club is running more than one age group team in a single division they will be documented at that time (i.e., A, B, or C team). Do not leave this meet until you have paid your $20 advancement fee and turned in your Junior Olympic individual and team declaration forms. You cannot compete in the National meet unless this is done the day of this competition. Advancement fees can be paid as soon as results are available. If you are part of a club, then a club coach or designate is requested to submit team entries per age group. Coaches can also advance their entire team at the close of the Young Men competition.
Course Description The course is primarily rough grass with some gravel, a few drainage ditches, a few wooden bridges, several concrete walkways to cross and some long, gradual hills. Spectators will be able to see most of the race. This is the exact course that you will be running at the USATF Junior Olympic Cross Country Nationals. Awards The first twenty (20) finishers in each age group will receive a Regional USATF Junior Olympic medal.
Directions to the Park From California take I-80 East to Reno. Once in Reno take the Virginia Street exit. Turn left on Virginia Street to 9th Street. Turn left on 9th Street for one block. Turn right on Sierra Street. Go up the hill for about ½ mile and take a left into Rancho San Rafael Park. |

If their name doesn’t grab your attention, their uniforms will.
The Buffalo Babes were even easier to spot than usual at the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Reno. With a snowstorm blanketing the course and visibility reduced by the whiteout, their bright pink jerseys stood out like a series of flashing beacons.
“It’s really easy to spot our runners in a crowd,” said team manager Joe Hartman.
The Buffalo Babes backed up their flashy name and color with a gritty showing Dec. 12 at the Junior Olympics, claiming seven of the top 15 spots in the Young Women’s (ages 17 and 18) race to win the national title with 26 points, comfortably in front of runner-up Team Idaho ‘s 51-point total.
Kelsey Smith of South Lake Tahoe led the pink charge in Reno, placing fourth in the 5,000-meter race in 19 minutes, 27.2 seconds. She was followed closely across the line by teammates Breanna Lewis (fifth in 19:28.3) and Hayley Scott (sixth in 19:30.4).
Michelle Mowry (10th in 19:43.8) and Katherine McFarren (13th in 20:05.9) rounded out the top five scorers. The Buffalo Babes’ depth was such that their “B” team placed fourth in the team standings.
“You could interchange them, they’re all so talented,” said Nekota Kay, the Vacaville High School cross country coach who serves as the Babes’ primary coach. “I’m in awe that they were able to run so well in a blizzard. The girls really wanted it.”
The Babes are the high school division of the Buffalo Chips, a Sacramento-based running club. Comprised of juniors and seniors from the Sac-Joaquin Section and Northern Nevada, the young women’s group joined forces following the 2009 prep cross country season to form an all-star lineup.
Smith is a three-time Nevada AAAA state champion in cross country for South Tahoe High School. Scott, an Oak Ridge senior, won the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I title. Lewis, a Sheldon senior, placed second at the section meet. Mowry finished fourth in the Nevada AAAA championships for Carson High School, and McFarren was second in the same race for Reno’s Bishop Manogue.
When high school competition concluded in mid-November, Kay organized informal workouts three times a week. Even though they spent much of the fall racing against each other, the runners gelled as a team as they prepared for the Junior Olympics. Smith traveled from the South Shore to Sacramento on weekends to train with her fellow Babes in more hospitable weather.
“We make sure that high school remains the focus,” said Hartman, whose duties include recruiting. “We have the high school coaches to thank for our success. Our whole goal is to give them different running experiences.”
The Junior Olympic race certainly qualified as a different experience.
“It was tough because the snow was coming down so hard, the visibility was horrible,” Smith said. “It just happened that we all ran awesome and managed to win it.”
At least Smith is accustomed to snow, living at Lake Tahoe. For the Sacramento-area runners, it was a novel experience.
“I had never even trained in snow before,” Scott said. “It was challenging, but it was fun.”
The Buffalo Babes were formed in 2000, and one of the club’s first runners was Caitlin Chalk, the former Granite Bay standout. At first, Thornton wasn’t sure what sort of reaction their name would receive.
“The girls love it,” he said. “They wouldn’t have it any other way.”
When he was assembling this year’s team, Hartman considered Reno’s altitude.
“It’s tough to go from sea level to 4,700 feet,” Hartman said. “That’s why I tried to get some Nevada girls on the team.”
Hartman, a Postal Service worker who lives in Rancho Cordova, cooked up the idea of outfitting the team in pink jerseys and headbands about a year ago. Again, his intuition was rewarded.
“I love ‘em,” Lewis said. “It’s our color and it’s bright.”
“It’s our tradition,” Scott said. “It’s fun to run in pink.”
The Buffalo Babes had a strong showing across the board in Reno, finishing second in the Girls Intermediate (15-16) race and eighth in Youth Girls (13-14 years old).
“John Mansoor and Bob Shor of the Pacific Association did an incredible job organizing the event,” Hartman said. “I know they must have been thinking, ‘I didn’t sign up for this,’ but they did a great job considering. It made for an unforgettable event.”
Surely Smith, the Tahoe recruit, felt right at home in snowy conditions, right?
Not really.
“I skied when I was younger, but not much anymore,” she said. “It’s too cold.”
