BROWN TRAFTON, KREINER, McCLAIN WIN USATF-PA TITLES AGAIN AT CSM

Olympic women’s discus gold medalist Stephanie Brown Trafton and American women’s javelin record holder Kim Kreiner won titles at USA Track & Field’s Pacific Association Championships at College of San Mateo on the Memorial Day weekend.

And Stanford grad Erica McClain of Menlo Park, the current USA season leader in the triple jump, won that event at 44 feet, 1 1/2 inches.

Brown Trafton returned to the site of her 2009 world leading throw (217 feet-2) and took the victory with a toss of 185-9 on a warm day.

Kreiner, who set an American record of 203-10 at CSM in 2006, needed only 145-0 to win this year’s competition.  She is still recovering from a surgical procedure earlier this year.

They were all happy to have a good competition in their lead-up to USATF’s National Championships at Drake University (Des Moines), June  24-27.

“I’m just preparing for the National Championships,” Brown Trafton said.  “Last year I peaked at this meet.  I hope I can continue to get better.”  Her next meet will be the adidas Grand Prix in New York on June 12.

McLain’s triple jump, into a 1.0 meter per second wind, was one of the best performances at San Mateo and capped a great weekend for the current USA indoor champion (where she had her official season-leading 46-1 1/4 jump).  Saturday, at Sacramento’s California Relays, McLain jumped 47-3 3/4, with an excessive 3.0 meter per second aiding wind -- but still the best all-conditions jump by an American in 2010 (and the sixth best in the world to that point in the season).

In men’s competition, former University of California distance star Bolota Asmerom won both the 5,000 meters (14:53.13) and the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:11.36).

PA meet participants earned double points in the association’s $15,000 Track and Field Grand Prix.

Record setters -- There were three record performances at the PA Championships.

--Tyler Sorensen, 16, set an intermediate boys age group USATF national record in the boys 5,000 meter race walk, 12 minutes, 16.70 seconds.

--Louise Walters set a 70-74 age group record in the women’s 3,000 meter race walk, 31:29.97.

--Cerah Moren utilized CSM’s fine throwing facility to extend her own age 10 world record in the javelin throw to 79 feet, 5 inches (bettering her previous mark of 77-11 set in February).

USATF CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS UPCOMING

--Many of the competitors will return to the Peninsula July 9-10 for USATF’s National Club Championships at San Francisco State University.   Performances at that meet will conclude scoring for  the season-long PA Grand Prix.

The championships will use the Westin and Clarion hotels in Millbrae for their meet headquarters.
